Everyone out there is brilliant in their own right, in their own area of expertise. Unfortunately, the world has changed, forcing us to be experts in MANY areas. This is stressful and overwhelming since you already have enough to do in your life. So I’ve made each lesson short and simple. You get to decide if you want to act on that immediately, mull it over or read another lesson.
Who Am I?
My name is Doe. It’s a nickname I was given by a boss in 1993 and it stuck. I’ve been a web designer since 2003 but the job changed in almost every single way about 7 years later and I wasn’t enjoying it anymore. As the internet grew, the amount of knowledge necessary to build a single website became enormous. Things became so specialized that what one person could do in 2003 required 5 different areas of specialty by 2012. In addition, people just don’t understand the internet and managing their outrageous expectations became something I was unable to accomplish without blood and risking my freedom “on the outside.”
In college, after realizing I respected people’s privacy too much to be a journalist, I took a marketing course. It fascinated me. I put up my first web page in 1996 and thought “this whole internet thing is stupid”. Thankfully, I was wrong (there’s a first time for everything). Internet Marketing (also known as online marketing and digital marketing) has been on a huge rise and you can spend years drowning in all there is to know. (But not you, you brilliant reader! You shall not drown at all here!) Did you read that in a booming announcer-like voice? No? Try it again.
I moved from the big city in 2000 to a small town with very few stores. As such, I embraced online shopping earlier than most. It’s still my favorite form of shopping (which I hate to do). I’ve laughed and laughed at people in the city that drive all over town to find the perfect whatever when they could have never left the comfort of their homes AND found the best price in the world online. Things are starting to shift even in little items and that puts each online business in a better position than ever before.
How Old Am I?
I don’t even think it’s rude to ask that, and many do. In this area of ‘tech’ and internet, I find that so many are 12 ½ years old and my trust level diminishes when I realize they don’t have any life experience to back up much of what they’ve said. That’s fine and I’m not judging, but it stresses me out to follow everything they say about MY business when they’ve never made a mortgage payment or moved out of mom’s basement. The technical brilliance in younger generations astonishes me. I’m older and slower. I’ll embrace Fisher Price products again in my latter years. Seriously. Keep your iWhatever and give me big, primary color buttons to push on my 8 track.
So, me. I was born in winter in the early ’70s. I became brilliant about the same time. It was inevitable really. With my special brand of crazy and my unique sense of style (sweats), I was born to entertain. I’ve confounded, confuzzled and befuddled people my entire life. Mission accomplished. That sweet, sweet feeling of success is washing over me as I type this. Or is that the smell of the litter box? It’s so hard to tell…
I’ve been self-employed since 2004 and as you might imagine, there’s been some SPARSE years! That’s life. And it’s learning. All fabulous knowledge for YOU and when I write my memoirs…
